as i speak, andhe u.n. security council will continue discussions on the situation today. more open access in and out of gaza is part of any longer-term solution. pay tribute to the efforts of the egtian government and the u.n. secretary-general to secure a ceasefire and have supported these efforts over the last few days. i discussed these with the egyptian, israeli and turkish foreign ministers over the weekend as the prime minister did with prime minister netanyahu and president por si. my honorable friend, the undersecretary of sate, is in ramallah today where he will meet president abbas after visiting israel yesterday. there is no military solution to the crisis in gaza or to the israeli/palestinian conflict. peace becomes harder to achieve with each loss of life and the creation of facts on the ground. the only way to give the palestinian people the state that think need and deserve and the israeli people the security and peace they are entitled to is through a negotiated two-state solution, and time for this is now running out. this requires israelis and palestinians to retu

in gaza, president obama's top diplomat at the u.n. is facing angry politics in washington. susan rice, the president's u.n. ambassador and a leading candidate to replace clinton at the state department, has been subject to withering and sometimes outlandish attacks from a wide range of republicans. senators john mccain and lindsey graham, two foreign policy leaders have slammed rice for her initial comments about the source of the libya attacks with mccain threatening to filibuster if he's nominated. many other republicans have joined in. 97 members of the house sent the president a letter monday opposing rice. now president obama is not backing down. the white house has confirmed it's still considering promoting rice and last week the president said if mccain and graham want to go after someone, they should go after him. rice was not exactly a household name during obama's first term. but all this heat from the political players is drawing some media fire. mahmoud abbas is expected to appear before the u.n. general assembly in a new bid for palestinian statehood. a move that despite earlier reports from abbas offices doesn't have the support of hamas leaders in gaza. what do all these events mean for lasting peace? executive committee member for the palestinian association, appreciate it. let's begin with negotiations in cairo today. what kind of progress do you expect to see? >> well, progress -- the initial step of cessation of violence has taken place. now the steps that deal with the substance and with more longer term arrangements such as lifting the siege. these steps have to take place. lifting the maritime blockade, sea blockade around gaza. leaving the territory and waters, also air space. more importantly all the crossing points by land. lifting the blockade would mean that gaza is resuming some sort of normal life again despite the israeli occupation. and that the palestinian people of gaza would begin a whole new phase. and that would be a very positive step towards not just conciliation but also peaceful negotiations. >
